[Interview] Putting Yoki In Hars
Earlier this week I had an opportunity to meet with the Kenyan EDM version of Fantastic Four,Yoki Hars. I first came to know them through this same blog and I must say, this here is an interesting lot. And they are just getting started. I announce here officially that I am in love(yes Dj Fita is in love) with their track Silicon Valley from their Ep,FemiYoki.
This track is so good… Okay okay, enough of my love issues, onto the interview now
EDM_Ke: First order of business, what does Yoki Hars Mean?
YH: Yoki was just a random name we came up with back in 2012. Hars on the other hand, represents the first letters of our names; Habil , Arnold, Roark and Skinny .
EDM_Ke: Seems you already answered my next question, but I’ll still ask it hehe. When did you guys meet?
YH: Yes. We first met back in high school, in 2012, and after learning that we all really wanted to make music, we formed YokiHars.
EDM_Ke: Lets break it down to your individual strengths.
Habill: My individual strength is in Electro & Progressive House
Arnold: Mine is in EDM Trap
Roark: Mine’s Dubstep and a little bit of EDM Trap.
Skinny: I’m a sucker for Progressive
EDM_Ke: Been a crew,is there a leader,someone in charge?
YH: A leader? No, there’s no leader among us. We know that picking one might lead to problems later on so we all treat each other equally.
EDM_Ke: Apart from music what else do you guys do?
YH:Apart from music production, we’re all in school. We are taking different university courses.
EDM_Ke: You just released your first EP, FemiYoki, can you tell us more about it?
YH: Ofcourse we can. FEMIYOKI – The EP is actually a six track EP. We’ve only released half of it, the rest will be out soon. The whole EP was to appreciate the women around us and we used pictures of some of the girls we know as cover photos for the songs.(Shout out to Mellanie and Psyche by the way)
EDM_Ke: I have to ask about Silicon Valley, what inspired that track?
YH: Uhhmm, Silicon Valley. That was our first track. In our minds, we all wanted to start off with a bang so that’s what inspired the track; the desire to get recognized.
EDM_Ke: Describe your sound in four words
YH: Catchy, melodic, jumpy, different
EDM_Ke: Any goals you want to achieve in the next 5 years?
YH: In the next 2 to 5 years our goals are to get signed to a good record label and also to increase our recognition by about 10 times what it is right now.
EDM_Ke: What has been your greatest challenge as a group?
YH: Our greatest challenge has been to get people to listen to our music. It’s so hard to convince people that our stuff is worth listening to. Until they actually hear it, most people won’t want to listen to any of the songs.
EDM_Ke: Who/what influences your music?
YH: The people who greatly influence our music are Knife Party and Major Lazer because their music sounds different. They combine different genres with EDM in ways no one could imagine.
EDM_Ke:If you had one chance to change something in the EDM Kenyan scene right now, what would you change and why?
YH: We would make Kenyan Radio Stations play more of, well, EDM generally (local & international) because they don’t play as much of it as they should. And we would also have more female producers, you know, just to even out the odds.
There it is. Hanging out with this guys is nothing short of fun. Though they say they have no leader, this is one of the most organized groups I’ve met. Hope to catch up with them sooner. Keep it EDM.Co.Ke hombres!
