What Is The Difference Between An EDM Mashup And Bootleg?
There has been a confusion between these two terms among EDM producers, DJs and Music fans alike. Both of these types of edits are used by the artists as a teaser or promotional materials which are distributed using digital media usually for free. Some times a few mashups and bootlegs are signed and released officially by the labels. and example of this would be Sophie Sugar Vs Sunlounger – Lost Together (Armin Van Buuren Mash Up)
This is a song or composition created by blending two or more pre-recorded songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the instrumental track of another. Of most music edits this is usually the easiest to identify. The best mashups seamlessly combine the best elements of each respective song into one cohesive package that it creates a new song from the parts of another song.
Zedd vs. Porter Robinson – Clear Language (Area 6 Mashup)
Adele vs. Skrillex – Set Fire To Everybody (ca7’s Mashup)
A bootleg on the other hand seems to be a tricky edit for people to define even music creators themselves seem to make frequent mistakes in classification of their songs. People seem to believe that bootlegs are synonymous with mashups, they are related but definitely not the same.
In the non EDM world a bootleg is an audio or video recording of a performance that was not officially released by the artist or under other legal authority (Wikipedia). In Dance Music, the unofficial and lack of legal authority aspects of a bootleg still exist but also original input form the respective ‘bootlegger’ is also present.
Bootlegs use portions of the original song or songs but they also incorporate original instrumentation, making them more along the lines of unofficial remixes rather than mashups.
If we were still in the Vinyl days, Bootlegs would fall under White Labels probably
Take a listen to these Bootlegs that we have selected for you
Avicii & David Guetta vs Whelan & Di Scala Sunshine to Sunrise (eSQUIRE Bootleg)
Michael Salvatori – Never Forget (Tritonal HALO3 Bootleg)
I do hope that now you won’t get confused by these terms 😀 If still confused ask for clarification in the comments box below
